The Nordic House - Pohjolan Pirtti Kukkolankoski


Nordic House - Pohjolan Pirtti is a loghouse, which built in traditional style for the area, first time in the 1910. Catering restaurant Pohjolan Pirtti - Nordic House locates on the Kukkola village, about 15 km from Tornio to north. Pirtti is located right above the rapids. Pohjolan Pirtti functions as a restaurant, open based on bookings, as well as the meeting point for the safaris which starting in Kukkola.



Pirtti was founded in 2004. And it has become very popular place to organize all kind of events, for example meetings, or your company's representative occasions, weddings, birthdays. All events are planned together with the customer. In Pohjolan Pirtti - Nordic House catering restaurant has seats 75 - 85 persons.

Pirtti has accommodations for 14 person, five rooms and shared facilities.

The Sauna is a substantial part of Finnish culture. There are five million inhabitants and over two million saunas in Finland - an average of one per household. For Finnish people the sauna is a place for easing with friends and family, and a place for physical and mental relaxation. The traditional sauna day is Saturday. Tornionjoki river is the biggest free-flowing river in Europe in which whitefish and salmon spawn. Kukkolankoski rapids are a crown jewel of Tornionjoki. It flows unobstructed even in winter. The village of Kukkola is situated by the rapids. The village is one of the old villages dotting the riverside. The village had a number of houses already in the 16th century. Especially near Kukkolankoski rapids you can find beautiful cultural environment and nature in abundance. Many old fishing traditions have been preserved to present day in the rapids area. The cultural environment around Kukkolankoski rapids include the buildings traditional to the area and fishing related constructions on both sides of Tornionjoki river that borders Sweden and Finland. Nowadays old fishing methods are still used in catching whitefish, lamprey and burbot.
